What is the best site to learn about English Slang?
Q. I'm writing a book about a girl that gets sent to England to hide out. I want to make sure that the slang is as correct as possible.
Asked by unknown - Tue Mar 3 21:59:52 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I'm sure websites could help you, but I think the best thing would be to talk to someone in or from England. What area is the girl hiding out in? Some of the slang will differ from area to area, but London slang should be pretty universal. A lot of young people say things differently, though. For example, they use an "f" sound instead of a soft "th" as in "thirty". They also use a "v" sound instead of a hard "th" as in "brother." I lived in England for a while, and I got to understand the slang primarily by meeting people in pubs. However, British magazines helped too. You will probably be able to pick up British magazines at nominal cost at your local Borders or Barnes & Noble. Go for low end, such as Hello and OK! as well as high end… [cont.]

Is slang and colloquial language the same thing?
Q. I have a question for English that says to 'identify two examples of both slang and colloquial language' in a story that we read. Are they the same thing? If not, what's the difference? Thanks so much.
Asked by Laurie - Mon Feb 16 19:33:17 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. colloquial language is like a dialect specific to a particular region, like ain't in the south or something. slang is simply like a widely accepted term for something. kind of like "stuff" or "like". colloquial is how a group of people talk and slang is widely accepted shortening or manipulation of words

How do you say belly button is Italian slang?
Q. I saw a movie w/Roberto Benigini Life is Beautiful, where he is speaking to school children and use's a slang word for belly button? I am aware that the correct word is ombelico! Thank you

A. Oh, yeah, that scene is hisotry by now!! The Italian is "Ombelico" Pronounciation: Omb-e (like mEtal or mErry)- lee-ko (put the stress on -ee-) But this is not a slang word, it's just a normal Italian word. I've heard that there is another form, more popular and vulgar, that is "ombellico" with double "LL" the pronounciation is the same but you have to make a stronger L sound

Q. I hang out with my friends and when they start using a slang word alot, I pick it up as well and use it myself. Why does this happen?

A. It's called mirroring, or something like that, and it's kind of like a basic instinct. It's how babies learn to talk and things like that, and it just sort of sticks with you.

Etymology and slang connotations of the Turkish word CUBUK?
Q. In modern Greek, a slang term for fellatio is "tsibouki" which is related to the Turkish word "cubuk" meaning pipe. I was wondering: 1. Is "cubuk" also used as a slang term for fellatio in Turkish? 2. Any ideas what the linguistic (pun not intended!) origins / etymology of "cubuk" is? Thanks!
Asked by Vrasta - Thu Jan 29 04:22:00 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1. "Cubuk" has no meaning in Turkish slang, as far as I know. It actually means rod or stick rather than pipe. The Turkish word for pipe is "boru", which does have a meaning in slang. 2. According to this etymological dictionary: the word "cubuk" is derived from Middle Persian "chobag", meaning stick or twig.

At uni they I didn't really learn much slang, only from private Indonesian teachers I had but I think it's important as it is a big part of communicative competence in a language.
